Dallas, TX – People with knowledge of the decision say Big 12 leaders have agreed to invite TCU to join the fractured league as early as the 2012 football season.
The offer to TCU will be extended sometime in the next few days, according to two people with ties to the Big 12. The people spoke only on condition of anonymity because the league has not announced the decision.
TCU, the defending Rose Bowl champion in football, agreed earlier this year to leave the Mountain West Conference after this season for the Big East, which has an automatic BCS berth. But the Big East is on the verge of losing Syracuse and Pittsburgh to the ACC.
The Big 12 lost Nebraska (Big Ten) and Colorado (Pac-12) over the summer and will lose Texas A&M to the SEC next year. Missouri is also exploring options to leave the Big 12.
Denton High student has suspected case of TB
School officials are warning parents that a Denton High student who recently moved from Ennis has a suspected case of tuberculosis.
A note on the Denton school district's website Thursday says county health officials informed them and are investigating.
Melissa Sosa of Denton told KTVT-TV after her 16-year-old son passed out Tuesday she took him to the hospital where initial skin tests for TB came back positive.
They await the results of another test to determine whether he has the contagious form of the disease.
The boy attended Ennis High School last year where he took a science class from a teacher who has the contagious form of TB.
Experts say TB is spread through the air and can be deadly if not properly treated.
Low winds help firefighters contain Texas blaze
Firefighters continue making progress on a 320-acre fire just a month after the state's most destructive wildfire hit the same Central Texas county.
Texas Forest Service spokesman John Nichols said Wednesday that the fire north of Bastrop is 50 percent contained.
Officials initially estimated the fire at 1,000 acres after it broke out Tuesday. But they revised the total after doing more specific calculations on the ground.
Nichols says the fire has not burned any homes, and none are in danger. He says 28 homes were evacuated.
Bastrop County officials decided to order evacuations early, in case the fire spread as quickly as the one over Labor Day weekend. That fire destroyed more than 1,500 homes.
But Nichols says lower winds and air resources helped firefighters contain this fire quickly.
Rangers advance again, and wait for ALCS opponent
The Texas Rangers are back in the AL championship series and waiting for an opponent.
This is a team that didn't win a postseason series in the franchise's first 49 seasons before getting to the World Series last year. Now the Rangers have advanced in the playoffs for the second straight year.
Game 1 of the ALCS is Saturday, either at the New York Yankees or home against Detroit. The Tigers and Yankees play the deciding game of their series Thursday night.
General manager Jon Daniels says the Rangers set out a few years ago to build a team that would last. He says they aren't where they want to be yet. But he hopes to look back someday and say, "Hey, we did something pretty special."
