Dallas, TX – Al Lipscomb, former Dallas City Councilman and civil rights activist will lie in repose in the Hall of State at Fair Park today and tomorrow, from noon until 6pm. KERA's BJ Austin reports.
The 86 year old Lipscomb died early Saturday morning, on a city election day. Lipscomb was instrumental in changing city government from at-large elected council positions to single member districts - considered a more representative form of government, especially for minorities. At City Hall yesterday, Council member Vonceil Jones Hill remembered Lipscomb.
Hill: Albert Louis Lipscomb - he started me on this road to council woman. It was Albert Louis Lipscomb who took my hand in 1982 and said, "You, too can be a city leader." Albert Louis Lipscomb is now being the mayor of the southern part of heaven. And the folks up there are saying, that's right.
"That's right" was a trademark phrase of Lipscomb's. The wake will be from 6-8 Friday evening at the Hall of State. Memorial services are Saturday morning at 11 at Friendship West Baptist Church.
