Texas Targets Payday Lending Firm & Midday Roundup

By KERA News & Wire Services

Dallas, TX – Texas has sued a payday lender that allegedly misrepresented itself as a government agency in some mailings.

Attorney General Greg Abbott on Friday announced a temporary restraining order against Patrick D. "Dylan" White and Federal Cash Advance of Oklahoma LLC, based in Norman. The company did business as CASHMAX, Fed Cash, TOPCASH and Cash Service Center.

Investigators say some alleged deceptive collection letters had government seals of Dallas County and the state, plus a clerk's forged signature. The court order bars the company from continuing to send fraudulent mailings.

White on Friday told The Associated Press that he had not been served with the lawsuit and believes the matter involves an employee who no longer works for the company.

Abbott seeks fines of up to $20,000 per violation.

Victims remembered 1 year after Fort Hood shooting

Relatives of the 13 people killed one year ago today -- during a shooting rampage at Fort Hood -- kneeled, cried and ran their hands across a 6-foot-tall granite memorial.

That tribute to the victims was unveiled today at the Central Texas post.

Many families of the 12 soldiers and one civilian who died on Nov. 5, 2009, met each other for the first time at the anniversary memorial.

Army Chief of Staff Gen. George Casey and Army Secretary John McHugh presented awards to more than 50 soldiers and civilians whose actions "went above and beyond the call of duty" to stop the attack.

Maj. Nidal Hasan, who was shot and paralyzed from the chest down, is charged with 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder.

4 teens caught, accused in Pantego party holdup

Four teenage suspects have been caught as police in Pantego investigate the robbery of about 30 people at a Halloween eve party. Police Chief Joel McKinney says three suspects were captured Wednesday night at an apartment complex. Fort Worth police say the fourth teen was caught after authorities found a loaded gun in his car.

The suspects, who are 17 and 18, face multiple counts of aggravated robbery.

Police say four young men, including two with guns, wore costumes when they crashed the party Saturday night. The father of one of the partygoers, who arrived to pick up his child, was beaten by the suspects and required medical attention.

Police have said most of the partygoers attend Arlington High School.

Hudgins quitting Texas Film Commission

The head of the Texas Film Commission is quitting and he denies allegations of sexual harassment brought by an employee.

Bob Hudgins was still listed Friday, on the commission's website, as director of the organization. The commission operates under the auspices of Gov. Rick Perry's office.

Hudgins on Thursday confirmed he plans to retire Nov. 30 and cited family reasons. He also says a sexual harassment complaint against him is without merit. Further details on the investigation were not immediately available.

Perry spokeswoman Katherine Cesinger declined comment, citing personnel matters.
