Supporters Rally Around Dallas Congresswoman & Nightly Roundup

By BJ Austin, KERA News & Wire Services

Dallas, TX – Supporters of Dallas Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson are speaking out. The Congresswoman is under fire for awarding scholarships from the Congressional Black Caucus to her grandsons, and the children of her top aide. None of the students were eligible.

At a Dallas City Hall rally, Pastor Denny Davis noted that Congresswoman Johnson has repaid the 30 thousand dollars in scholarship money, and corrected a mistake.

Davis: and perhaps an error in judgment at points. But we have trusted her heart, thus far. And we continue to trust her heart in terms of the well being of other people.

Jenny McGarry supports Johnson's Republican opponent Stephan Broden in the November election.

McGarry: This is about the kids. This is about a district that needs to be served by a Congressperson that cares. Eddie Bernice Johnson needs to go.

At the rally, some 50 Johnson supporters outlined the Congresswoman's accomplishments, urged forgiveness, and called on people to "move on."

Two Killed At Dallas Bus Stop

A suspected drunk driver is in jail after his pickup jumped a curb and plowed through a DART bus stop on Harry Hines early this morning. Two men, believed to be homeless, were sleeping in the bus shelter. Both men were killed.

The pickup kept going and crashed into a tree on North Butler. 50 year old Julian Cadena Cerda failed a field sobriety test, and has been charged with two counts of intoxication manslaughter. Cerda was driving with an expired license, and is suspected of being in this country illegally.

Arlington police badges to promote Super Bowl

Uniformed Arlington police officers have the chance to raise awareness that the city midway between Dallas and Fort Worth is the site for next year's Super Bowl.

Police on Monday announced a commemorative badge will be available, for law officers to wear if they wish, from Sept. 19 until game day, Feb. 6, 2011.

The badge, which includes a rendering of Cowboys Stadium, also will salute seven Arlington officers who have died in the line of duty. The names of James E. Johnson, Gary Harl, Terry Lewis, Jerry Crocker, Craig Hanking, Joseph Cushman and Craig G. Story are etched on the back of the badge.

A portion of the proceeds from other Super Bowl commemorative items, such as a key chain and paperweight, created by the Arlington Police Department, will benefit the department's foundation.
