Dallas, TX – Dallas Police are stepping up efforts to reverse a 25% increase in sexual assault cases. KERA's BJ Austin says officers are launching a public awareness campaign, and stepped up patrols.
Dallas City Council member Delia Jasso helped announce the Sexual Assault Awareness Campaign at City Hall.
Jasso: Across the country a sexual assault occurs every two minutes. Data also shows that alcohol is the number one factor in many of the cases that have been reported.
Dallas Police say more than 60% of sexual assault cases involve alcohol and/or drugs. Assistant Dallas Police Chief Cynthia Villareal says that's why the new police action aimed at reducing the 25% increase in sexual assault cases will target the city's entertainment districts: Lower Greenville, Northwest Highway/Harry Hines, and some clubs in northeast Dallas.
Villareal: Increased bike and foot patrols, especially at closing time. Increase enforcement action taken by our off-duty officers working parking lots of bars and clubs.
Chief Villareal says officers will also be trained in what to look for in a potential victim and intervene before an offense occurs.
Jane Barker, with the Dallas Area Rape Crisis Center, says the pro-active police program will be comprehensive, focusing on more than the potential victim, and how to stay safe.
Barker: They're also talking to potential perpetrators about what it means when you're convicted of rape. This can ruin your life forever. You'll always be on the sex offender register.
Council member Jasso says a majority of sexual assaults involve know persons or acquaintances. 15% of victims accepted rides from the offender. Police also plan to conduct personal safety presentations to community and crime watch groups as well as on local campuses.
