Dallas Wants Audit of Super Bowl Impact & Nightly Roundup

By BJ Austin, KERA News

Dallas, TX – Dallas officials want to know if Super Bowl 45 produces the economic impact that experts predict.

Super Bowl officials forecast a five million dollar impact to Dallas. The state Comptroller says it'll be four-and-a-half million.

City Councilman Steve Salazar and other Economic Development Committee members want game officials to do an audit of Super Bowl spending.

Salazar: If we're going to want to be doing these events, it's important that we understand what the value is. And the only way your can understand the value is to measure the taxes. And post-event, we can also measure the number of rooms filled.

Salazar says Dallas never did find out if the NBA All Star Game last winter met the predicted economic impact. Council members don't want to repeat that with the Super Bowl in Cowboys Stadium in February.

UTD Without A/C

The air conditioning is OUT at the University of Texas at Dallas. Classes are cancelled, the campus is closed, and most buildings locked down.

UTD's Susan Rogers says a construction crew clipped the main power line to the central energy plant. It provides the water to the air conditioning coolers for all campus buildings.

But, Rogers says they are able to provide "some" cooling.

Rogers: Our most important strategic locations to keep cool are the areas of computer servers or research labs. And we want to reassure people who work here, or got to school here and do research here, that those areas are fine.

Employees are asked to work "remotely" until further notice. Today was the last day of summer school. The next three days are so-called "dead" days. Officials hope to have the AC up and buildings cool by Friday, the start of final exams.

Marine Hit & Run Suspect Arrested

A 44 year old man from Hurst is under arrest for the hit and run death of a U.S. Marine in Irving.

23 year old Evan Sanchey of Yakima, Washington was on leave from Afghanistan. He was struck and killed as he tried to cross Airport Freeway. The driver kept going.

Irving police say information from witnesses helped them locate the car involved and identify the driver.

Richard Dean turned himself in yesterday, and has been released on 30 thousand dollars bond.

A ten thousand dollar reward had been offered in the case.

Dallas Officer Arrested

A Dallas Police officer is under arrest for allegedly assaulting her 18 year old daughter.

Police say Senior Corporal Alma Fowler was arrested at her home. Officers reportedly found the Corporal Fowler passed out in her garage. She was on restricted duty at the auto pound because of a previous D-W-I.

Last year, Flower crashed her car and was found passed out at the wheel.
