Woman Dies After Denton Plane Crash & Midday Roundup

By KERA News & Wire Services

Dallas, TX – A Dallas-area woman has died a day after a single-engine plane crash that left her husband critically injured. The Dallas County Medical Examiner's Office says 57-year-old Kathy Culp of Carrollton died about 1 a.m. Monday.

The crash happened Sunday evening about a mile southwest of Denton Municipal Airport. A Texas Department of Public Safety trooper tells The Dallas Morning News the plane took a steep right turn and crashed into a field after the pilot reported insufficient power shortly after takeoff.

Culp's husband, 43-year-old Harold Culp, remained in critical condition Monday at a Dallas hospital.

Gun permit allows quick access to Texas Capitol

Everyone from lobbyists to lawyers and journalists are rushing to get permits to carry guns inside the Texas Capitol because it will give them VIP-style access to the building.

A unique loophole in a new security procedure means a gun permit is like a special-access pass. It allows people who are certified to carry a gun to bypass lines at the metal detectors that were set up after a shooting incident earlier this year.

Texas law allows people to carry a weapon if they have a permit and as long as the gun is concealed. A separate lane for license-holders had to be created so gun-toters could enter without having to pull out their weapons - or unconceal them - along with their wallets and keys.

Trial to begin for father accused of starving kids

Jury selection is set to begin in the trial of a man accused of locking three children in a Dallas hotel bathroom for as long as nine months.

Alfred Santiago faces three charges of injury to a child plus a charge of continuous sexual abuse. His trial is scheduled to begin Monday in a Dallas County state district court.

Jury selection for the trial of the children's mother, Abneris Santiago, is scheduled for Tuesday. She faces three counts of injury to a child.

Court officials say opening statements for his trial will then begin Wednesday, with her trial to follow.

Police found the three children shut inside a hotel bathroom last summer and believe they were there for at least nine months. Officials say the 11-year-old girl and her 10- and 5-year-old half brothers were emaciated and filthy.
