Dallas, TX – A Lancaster police officer responding to gunfire and two other men, including the son of Dallas Police Chief David Brown, were shot and killed at an apartment complex. Lancaster Police Chief Keith Humphrey today identified the slain lawman as Officer Craig Shaw.
The coroner's office identified the two other men who died as 23-year-old Jeremy McMillan and 27-year-old David Brown Jr., the son of the Dallas police chief who took office in May.
Shaw last night responded to a domestic disturbance.
Humphrey says the shooter was confronted, there was an exchange of gunfire, at some point the officer was shot. Humphrey says then there was an additional exchange of gunfire -- and the shooter was killed.
Humphrey declined to say whether McMillan or Brown was believed to be the gunman. The Dallas County Sheriff's Department is investigating.
Demographer says Texas must do more pre-K prep
A former head of the U.S. Census Bureau says Texas must do more to prepare preschool-age children before they enter kindergarten so they won't drop out later. Former state demographer Steve Murdock also says Texas needs to boost its grant program for college students.
The San Antonio Express-News reported Monday that Murdock, now a sociology professor at Rice University, says current trends could lead to three of every 10 workers not having a high school education by 2040.
Murdock led the U.S. Census Bureau during the administration of George W. Bush.
Perry says China trip promotes Texas in Asia
Gov. Rick Perry says his first trip to China has led to increased exposure for Texas in Asia.
Perry, in a conference call from Taiwan on Monday, told reporters that he held talks with two Chinese companies that are interested in making investments in Houston and in Corpus Christi. Specifics were not released.
Perry also says he took part in conversations that could result in direct flights from Texas to Shanghai and Beijing, with routes including Dallas-Fort Worth and Houston.
Perry, who arrived in China on June 13, led the Texas economic mission to Shanghai World Expo 2010. The GOP governor, who faces Democrat Bill White in the November election, did not say when he returns to Texas.
