Dallas, TX – Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert looked like a candidate as he shook hands at the state GOP convention. But KERA's BJ Austin says it wasn't about politics.
Talk about a U.S. Senate run by Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert has persisted, even after Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison decided not to resign her seat after her primary defeat in the Governor's race. Mayor Leppert holds a non-partisan office as the city's chief executive officer, but is known in local Republican Party circles.
At the Convention, Mayor Leppert shook hands and welcomed GOP delegates and dignitaries to Dallas.
Leppert: We've got a big convention in town. There's a lot of folks, and we've got a big convention in town.
The Mayor does make appearances at some of the large Dallas conventions, but it's usually an official dais spot not the casual crowd-working of this convention. But the Mayor downplayed any political significance.
Leppert: There's a lot of folks I know, and I'm looking forward to saying Hi to a lot of folks I do know.
But what about a Senate run. The Mayor doesn't say yes or no
Leppert: What I've said all along is in life opportunities and obstacles come along and I will always look at those.
Mayor Leppert shook hands for a while, then caught a plane to Oklahoma City for a weekend meeting of the U.S. Conference of Mayors.
