Dallas, TX – Tonight the Flower Mound City Council will decide whether to enact a six-month moratorium on permits for some gas-drilling facilities.
The vote follows a petition drive organized by Virginia Simonson and others. Simonson says the proposed facilities would be too close to the community.
Simonson: They are collecting gas and storing gas. They are collecting produced water and storing it. You can have a mishap with explosions or spills.
The moratorium would establish an advisory committee. If councilmembers reject a moratorium voters could approve one in November.
Robbery suspect shot by Dallas police
A robbery suspect has been hospitalized after he was shot by Dallas police moments after allegedly pointing a handgun at an officer.
The suspect, who was not identified, was taken to a hospital Monday, about 40 minutes after he allegedly robbed a woman at a bus stop.
Police say a plainclothes officer in an unmarked vehicle located the suspect's vehicle and called for uniformed officers to make the arrest. When they approached the man, police say he pointed a handgun at one of them. The officer opened fire, striking the suspect, who then fled.
He was arrested nearby and taken to the hospital. There was no word on his condition.
Dallas police spokesman Lt. Andrew Harvey praised a witness who called 911 and gave an accurate description of the suspect and his vehicle.
Perry attends glitzy Washington gala
Even ardent anti-Washington Gov. Rick Perry made an appearance in the nation's capital to attend the glitzy White House Correspondents' Dinner over the weekend.
The gala featured celebrities and politicians, including Democratic President Barack Obama. Perry was invited by the conservative Washington Times newspaper. The governor said the Saturday night dinner was "a good place to be."
His appearance was a bit jarring for a Republican governor who's trying to tamp down speculation that he might run for president in 2012. Ray Sullivan, Perry's chief of staff, said the governor's attendance was not meant to stir speculation about 2012. Perry also has another Washington event. On Monday, he was speaking at a U.S. Chamber of Commerce summit.
