Former Dallas City Councilman Don Hill has finished testifying in his bribery and extortion trial. KERA's BJ Austin says the key defendant in the complex federal case was on the stand for six days.
Don Hill answered questions about accepting thousands of dollars from co-defendant Darren Reagan at night in a church parking lot. He answered questions about co-defendant Shelia Farrington, now his wife, and his knowledge of her bank accounts. Prosecutors say she funneled money to Hill and co defendant D'Angelo Lee in exchange for favorable votes on housing projects. Dallas attorney Clint David, a courtroom observer, says there's a lot of evidence for the defense to overcome, and Don Hill HAD to testify.
David: Don Hill is a very charismatic figure. He's a 30 year attorney; a very refined politician. And I think the defense felt, and Don Hill probably felt personally, I want to look this jury in the eye and tell them I didn't do these things.
Before Hill stepped down, prosecutors hammered again at what they see as inconsistencies in his testimony and truthfulness. It's unclear if any of the four other defendants will testify. The defense expects to wrap up its case next month.
