Dallas, TX –

U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison says she'll formally announcer her candidacy for Governor of Texas next month. She says she's raised 6.7 million dollars. KERA's Bill Zeeble has more.

Hutchison and about 50 Republican backers filled a room in Dallas County Republican headquarters. Senator Hutchison said phase one of her gubernatorial campaign is now over.

Hutchison: The exploratory committee is closed. The campaign for governor of Texas is open for business. I'm excited and ready to go. I'm running for governor of this state.

Hutchison said she wanted a month at home in Texas and away from the Senate in Washington before making the official announcement to run for Governor. She called her fundraising effort of 6.7 million dollars over the last half year a victory, saying only George W. Bush had raised more in the same amount of time.

Governor Rick Perry reported raising 4.2 million dollars.
