Dallas, TX – Texas Senators have rejected the Governor's nomination of Don McElroy to another term as Chairman of the State Board of Education.
McElroy has generated controversy with his views and handling of the creationism vs. evolution discussion during approval of new science textbooks as well as other leadership tactics and statements.
Republican Steve Ogden came to McElroy's defense, while Democrat Kirk Watson called for rejection of the nomination.
Ogden: It is not fair to say that if you don't believe in the Darwinian theory of evolution. If you question the scientific premise behind global warning, you're not qualified to be on the State Board of Education. Heck, scientists are supposed to question all the time.
Watson: I'm not talking about a mere perception problem here, members. There's a lack of credibility in this board under this chairman that's undermining the institution among Texans regardless of whether they agree with Dr. McElroy or not.
McElroy's reappointment fell two votes short. The Governor will have to appoint someone else. McElroy will remain on the Board but not as Chairman.
