Arlington's GM Plant Escapes Tough Layoffs

By Bill Zeeble, KERA

Dallas, TX – Auto Workers president JR Flores says the company's only large SUV plant will maintain production. He calls the local impact of GM's huge money problems extremely minimal. A few people will lose their jobs.

JR Flores: We're talking about some white-collar jobs that are not production. Our biggest threat is lack of auto sales, you know, lack of consumer confidence right now.

Nationally, GM has already cut thousands of hourly and salaried workers. The company hopes to qualify for yet more billions in government money by a June 1st administration deadline. But to get there, GM needs to slash yet more of its budget and reach new labor agreements. Many predict bankruptcy may be its only option.
