Dallas, TX – The Democratic primary race for Dallas County Judge may become a little crowded. KERA's BJ Austin says political newcomer, Clay Jenkins has announced his candidacy, as others are testing the waters.

Announcing his run for Dallas County Judge, Attorney Clay Jenkins says he was inspired by Barack Obama, and the people he met when he worked on that campaign. Jenkins believes he can translate that enthusiasm and inclusiveness to County Government. And he may face a crowded primary field.

Incumbent County Judge, Democrat Jim Foster has announced he's running for re-election. Former State Representative and businessman Sam Coats, as well as former Dallas City Councilmember Larry Duncan have also expressed interest.

Steve Tillery, director of the Dallas County Democratic Party, says a primary battle among DEMOCRATS for county-wide office used to be rare.

Tillery: I think probably more than anything it's a signal that people understand that as Democrats they can be elected county-wide in Dallas County now. You'll probably see a lot more people who are qualified to hold county-wide offices in Dallas County stepping forward and offering to run now.

Democrat Foster's election as County Judge in 2006 ended a long string of Republicans in that office.
