North Texans to Chair Valued House Committees

Dallas, TX – North Texas will have some added clout in the Texas House this session. House Speaker Joe Straus announced committee assignments today and rewarded the earliest supporters who helped get him elected.

Straus named Waxahachie Republican Jim Pitts to again chair the appropriations committee which decides how and where money is spent. Plano Republican Brian McCall will head the calendars committee which determines which bills will be heard. Dallas Republican Dan Branch will chair the higher education committee. Carrollton Republican Burt Solomons will chair State Affairs. Fort Worth's Charlie Geren will chair administration. Other North Texans named as committee chairs include: *Elections- Rep. Todd Smith, (R) Euless *Pensions & Invvestments- Rep. Vicki Truitt, (R) Keller *Urban Affairs- Rep. Yvonne Davis, (D) Dallas Committee chairs have extra influence because they can determine whether bills before them are killed or sent to the full House for consideration.
