Dallas, TX – The Dallas City Council hears from urban planning experts today. KERA's BJ Austin says the regular Wednesday briefing has been set aside for a special session on sustainable development and urban design.
Dallas City Manager Mary Suhm in a memo to council members says while Texas has been spared the full effects of the economic downturn so far things have slowed. And she says that's a good time to take a breath and reflect on the type of city Dallas leaders and builders are creating, and future direction.
On today's panel is Larry Beasley, who led the city of Vancouver's inner city revitalization; Christopher Leinberger, visiting fellow at the Brookings Institute; Maurice Cox, Director of Design, National Endowment for the Arts, and James Rojas, Transportation Manager for Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transit Authority. The city manager expects an in-depth discussion on best practices that relate to the "new" Dallas.
