McKinney Hit With Winter Blast

Dallas, TX – This morning's winter blast across North Texas coated bridges and overpasses with ice, caused schools to be delayed or cancelled and blanketed McKinney with a thin layer of "white." KERA's BJ Austin reports the icy streets proved to be quite a challenge for some.

Lawns, street medians and parking lots were covered in a crunchy, white layer. The winter blast prompted McKinney City Hall to close and cancel the City Council meeting. McKinney Schools also closed. And White Avenue lived up to its name. A white mixture of ice and snow covered the hill to the stoplight at Redbud Boulevard. That was not good news for Carina Sadler.

Sadler: I stalled out right in front of my apartment complex. I couldn't move forward or backward. Cars in front of me couldn't move forward or backward. Cars in back of me couldn't move forward or backward. Luckily, my husband's here so he's gonna...

He couldn't get any traction either and continued a sideward slide in their Jeep Wranger. A passerby in a truck offered to push the Jeep to the top of the hill and through the stoplight, but he, too, started sliding - even with the help of a couple of onlookers.

Schoolteachers: We're school teachers and we're out and about. We got off today. We're having fun, and we just stopped to help. We're helping cars get off the road.

But they stood back and watched as a big Dodge pickup, impatient to pass, gunned it on the ice, zig-zagged, and took off on an adjacent side street. The schoolteachers also rushed to push a black Cadillac off the slippery hill and headed the driver in the opposite direction. Meanwhile, back in the Jeep at the top of the icy hill, Carina's husband finally got going, through the stoplight and around the corner, onto level ground.

Sadler: I was hoping they would have it sanded by now. This is not, not a good day.

Unless you're a third grader. Then a snow day is a pretty cool.
