Dallas, TX – A compromise is in the works to solve the problem of "too much of a good thing" in the downtown Dallas Arts District. KERA's BJ Austin says a deal has been struck to head off a "noise war" between two neighboring venues.
The stage of the renovated Annette Strauss Artists Square now FACES the Meyerson Symphony Center ... just yards to the west. Former City Councilmember Veletta Lill says the Symphony and Center for Performing Arts have crafted a compromise.
Lill: Annette Strauss Square I think people believe it's extremely important because it's kind of the space for everyone. They can go down, outside, picnic, enjoy and outdoor concert. It happens to be right next to one of the world's best performance halls.
Under the agreement, the outdoor performances using mics and amplifiers are banned when rehearsals or performances are underway at the Meyerson. AND, no performance at the Square can exceed 90 decibels. One Councilman wants to know if that's enough to protect nearby downtown hi rise residents. A council vote comes next month.
