Dallas, TX – In Texas today, Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison said she stands behind the Bush administration's demand that Russia withdraw its troops from Georgian territory. She talked about concerns that Russia might be interested in re-creating the former Soviet Union.
Hutchison: Many of us have for a long time been concerned about the aggressive stance Russia is taking with the clear indication they are trying to re-form the Soviet Union In some cases they have taken economic measures that have been detrimental to the former republics that were part of the Soviet Union. I think we need to be firm in our support of these people who have become independent and they are trying to hold their own.
Hutchison, a member of the defense appropriations committee, says the U.S. should be cautious in how it proceeds. She did not provide specifics about tougher measures we should consider.
