The top local stories this evening from KERA News:

The first state-backed gold depository in the country just opened up in Austin. The private storage company Lone Star Tangible Assets will be in charge of the Texas precious metals depository until 2019, according to The Texas Tribune

The company will soon begin construction on a bigger facility in Leander to house all the gold. In 2013, Southlake Representative Giovanni Capriglione proposed a bill to establish the Texas bullion depository. The Tribune reports Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar was the first to use the fully insured Texas Bullion Depository after depositing some of his personal gold in the vault earlier this week.

Other stories this evening:

  • The state of Texas knew health care companies were skimping on services for some of the state’s most vulnerable patients, and failed to stop it. That’s what The Dallas Morning News found after a yearlong investigation. The newspaper looked at how Texas treats residents who rely on Medicaid, the government insurance program for the poor and disabled. David McSwane is a reporter with The Dallas Morning News and he talked with Texas Standard host David Brown.

  • There’s an ongoing crisis in Myanmar – formerly Burma – caused by violence against Rohingya Muslims. Many call it genocide, and it’s led to an exodus of hundreds of thousands of people. And as Pablo Peña reports, some Rohingya now call North Texas home and a local Islamic group is helping many of them.
