The Halloween forecast from the National Weather Service in Fort Worth is calling for colder than normal temperatures.

It looks like there will be real chills this Halloween — the National Weather Service has issued the first freeze watch of the season.

The Dallas-Fort Worth area is expected to be around 46 degrees when trick-or-treating commences Thursday. Although the forecast stays dry, parents and caregivers should plan on extra layers with those princess and superhero costumes before heading out.

By 9 p.m., temperatures likely will be in the upper 30s. The average low temperature for Halloween in North Texas is 52.

Temperatures early Friday morning will approach the freezing mark, with outlying areas dipping just a little lower. The high on Friday and Saturday should reach the upper 50s, with the low Saturday in the mid-to-lower 30s.

If all this seems like too much too soon, you're right. Well, almost. The last time it hit freezing in October was in 1993 when it bottomed out Oct. 30 at 32 degrees. The earliest freeze on record in Dallas happened Oct. 22, 1898, it hit 31 degrees. On average, North Texas' first freeze happens Nov. 22.

But don't worry if cold isn't your thing — the weather service is forecasting highs in the lower 70s again by Monday.
