Texas Protests: An Officer’s Perspective On Police Brutality; Why Protesters Are Marching In Dallas

Salina Jernigan, 10, held a sign with other protesters demonstrating in front of Dallas City Hall in downtown Dallas on Saturday.

Protests continue in North Texas in response to police killings of George Floyd and other black Americans nationwide.

Dallas officials have expanded the area of an overnight curfew – the area now includes Trinity Groves and West Village, in addition to the downtown area, as well as Victory Park, Uptown, Deep Ellum, the Farmers Market and the Cedars.

Dallas police arrested well over 100 protesters Monday night on the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge. Marchers were not arrested for breaking the 7 p.m. curfew, but for obstructing a roadway. Hear from the police chief on what happened.

Much of the anger in the wake of George Floyd's death has been aimed at the Minneapolis police officer charged with murder. But three other officers were at the scene. Many have asked: Why didn't the three other officers on the scene do something? Joe Gamaldi, the president of the Houston Police Officers' Union and national vice president of the Fraternal Order of Police, talked with David Brown, host of public radio's Texas Standard. Gamaldi said officers should speak out when a colleague does something wrong.

Demonstrations continue across North Texas. Hear from some of the protesters in Dallas about why they attended.
