Salvation Army Cooling Stations Open To Help Those Out In The Heat

Associated Press
As the temperature nears the triple-digit mark, Rafael Trevino keeps cool as he plays in the water at a public park in downtown San Antonio in July. Temperatures in North Texas are expected to be 100 or above through Tuesday.

A stifling heatwave means the Salvation Army has thrown open the doors of cooling stations across North Texas.

They're stocked with cold, bottled water, and there's plenty of room for people to bask in the air conditioning as long as they'd like.

With predicted highs above 100 degrees forecast through Tuesday, dehydration and heatstroke are concerns. Pat Patey with the Salvation Army of North Texas says the homeless and people who work outside are especially at risk.

"One year we had a letter carrier with the U.S. Post Office and just started feeling flushed, and knew the cooling station was at our center because he had delivered mail there," Patey said. "He came up, and came through the door, and as soon as he came through our doors he collapsed."

Both of the Salvation Army homeless shelters in Dallas and Fort Worth will serve as cooling stations, open seven days a week from 9 a.m. through 8 p.m. There are 11 other cooling stations open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
