Sen. Cornyn To Join Vice President On Trip To Border
Sen. John Cornyn will join Vice President Mike Pence and other elected officials Friday on a trip to McAllen in the Rio Grande Valley.
They're expected to meet with U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials.
Cornyn spoke on the Senate floor Thursday highlighting the challenges of processing hundreds of thousands of migrants who've crossed the U.S.-Mexico border in recent months.
"This has placed an unbelievable strain on federal, state, and local law enforcement as well as the cities, the counties, and the nongovernmental organizations that have tried to step in to help," he said. "We need to pass legislation here in Congress that makes lasting changes to our immigration system, particularly our system whereby people apply for and receive asylum, so we can prevent this humanitarian crisis from becoming the norm."
Cornyn says he'll soon introduce a bill designed to provide resources to local jurisdictions to help identify the remains of those who've died along the border and to solve missing persons cases.
