Fourth and eighth grade Texas readers fell below the national average in testing, according to results on the Nations Report Card. Math students fared better.
The findings come from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), which crunches numbers for the U.S. Department of Education.
Fourth grade Texans rank 41st in the nation, while eighth graders rank 38th. Within the state, however, scores rose for 8th graders since 2009.
The same group of Texas students did better in math. Both fourth and eighth graders met or scored better than the national average.
Minority African American and Hispanic Texans in both grades scored better than their peers in the national rank.
