Five stories that have North Texas talking: there’s a flash flood watch for most of North Texas, the candidates for lieutenant governor take sides on Congress’ latest immigration bill, new photos of an old German war ship off the Texas coast, and more.
A flash flood watch will be in effect for most of North Texas through tomorrow afternoon. The National Weather Service is predicting two-day rainfall totals of at least two to four inches across the watch area. That area includes the following counties: Collin, Cooke, Dallas, Denton, Delta Fannin, Grayson, Hopkins, Hunt, Jack, Kaufman, Lamar, Montague, Parker, Rains, Rockwall, Tarrant, Wise, Van Zandt.
In Dallas, there is an 80 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms with winds as high as 20 mph. KERA will be watching the situation throughout the day.

- The two candidates for Texas lieutenant governor have made their stances on the immigration bill being sponsored by two Texas senators in Congress. KERA’s Shelley Kofler reports Republican candidate Dan Patrick supports the immigration bill, which would speed up the hearing process for Central American children who have crossed the border. His Democratic opponent, Leticia Van De Putte, says the speedy hearing could be a death sentence for some for some children seeking asylum from violence.
- Photos of a sunken Nazi submarine have been captured off the Texas Gulf coast. The U-166 sub was discovered in 2001 by ocean explorer Robert S. Ballard. The U-166 sub was a type of U-boat built in 1940. These U-boats swam like sharks waiting for prey in the ocean. After sinking four ships in 1942, including an American passenger steamer named the Robert E. Lee (which was discovered two miles away from the sunken German sub), an escort U.S. Navy patrol craft sunk the U-166. Check out these stunning pictures.
- Austin director Richard Linklater is out with a new film this week. Boyhood took 12 years to make, and according to our Big Screen team, the film was worth the wait. Linklater is known for his films Dazed and Confused, Before Sunrise, and Bernie.
- Lousiana-based animation studio Moonbot Studios has kept busy since winning an Academy Award in 2012 for best animated short. KERA’s Jerome Weeks caught up with former Dallasites and Moonbot founders William Joyce and Brandon Oldenburg have built the studio into a kind of mini-media conglomerate, churning out books, apps, animated shorts, and even a music video for the Polyphonic Spree.
