The award is the highest honor among photographers and is given to those for the "best photographic reporting or interpretation from abroad requiring exceptional courage and enterprise," and it entails a deliberate decision to go in harm's way. NACHTWEY is only the seond photojournalist to be given the award three times. He's been to areas of conflict in Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala, Lebanon, the West Bank, Sudan, the Philippines, Northern Ireland and more. A book of NACHTWEY's photographs, "Deeds of War," was published in 1989 by Thames and Hudson.
