Texans Pass Propositions That Will Help Veterans

Voters across Texas approved two propositions on Tuesday that will help veterans and their families.

Proposition 1, which passed with 87 percent of the vote, gives a residential property tax exemption to the spouses of soldiers killed in action.

State Rep. Chris Turner, an Arlington Democrat, sponsored the bill.

"Proposition 1 in no way ever comes close to repaying the debt we owe these military families," Turner said. "But what it can do hopefully is make life a little bit easier for them and say that our state is indebted to them for their sacrifice to country."

Another measure, Proposition 4, passed with support from 85 percent of voters.  It eases the property taxes on homes donate to disabled vets.

All nine statewide propositions that would alter the Texas constitution passed easily, many by wide margins. That includes the water proposition, Prop 6, which got the most attention of any statewide measure. The plan will use $2 billion in reserve funds to help Texas meet future water needs. Other amendments authorize a reverse mortgage loan for purchasing homestead property and provide for stronger sanctioning of judges who violate court standards.
