Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings will be at the Back to School Fair early Friday to greet parents and kids, and talk to the media about the event. The Dallas School Fair's one of the nation's biggest.

Free school supplies will be handed out at the 18th annual Mayor’s Back to School Fair in Dallas. It opens at 8 a.m. Friday in Fair Park.

More than 35,000 people are expected at what Dallas Mayor Rawlings calls one of the nation’s biggest events of its kind.

“It’s a real proof that we as a community can make a difference in kids’ lives,” Rawlings said.

Families get in line hours in advance for free dental and vision screenings, immunizations and haircuts.

“The message to parents is we all have a responsibility in this," Rawlings said. "We as a community are willing to step up if they’re not of means to help those kids.”

Families who haven’t yet qualified for free supplies can register tomorrow, but they’ll need a photo id, and proof of income and residency.
