Duncanville High School Already Following Latest Dept. Of Education Rule

It’s too soon to know if Texas schools will find it hard to comply with a new federal rule. It says schools must give students with disabilities a fair chance to participate in sports.

Duncanville High School’s Athletic Director, Cathy Self-Morgan, says her district’s already doing that.

In athletics and our sports, our doors are open.  If a student or parent comes in and they want to be involved, we give them a chance.  We had a young man that was burned severely and lost his hands and lost one eye and he played on our soccer team.”

Self-Morgan says if students can handle the sport, they’re treated like everyone else. There’s also a cheerleader squad of students with disabilities, and a gym class pairing special needs kids with those who are not.
