Dallas, TX – This weekend, the Texas Department of Transportation positioned flashing signs along coastal highways urging drivers to keep their gas tanks full. Transportation officials moved gasoline supplies to coastal corridors.
Transportation spokesman Chris Lippincott says the state is also preparing to activate contra-flow lanes which would allow more people to evacuate quickly.
Lippincott:
(Lippincott explains that under contr-flow plans all lanes of traffic on an evacuation route flow in the direction away from the area of danger. Traffic is not allowed to drive into that area on those routes. He says drivers need to keep their gas tanks full in case they must evacuate.)
The city of Brownsville has called for voluntary evacuations and the Texas Youth Commission began moving several hundred inmates.
Governor Perry has prepared to activate military troops, rescue helicopters and boats if they're needed.
