Dallas, TX –

Along with crime and economic development, education has been a recurring issue in the Dallas mayoral runoff race between city councilman Ed Oakley and businessman Tom Leppert. Leppert, in particular, has advocated a more active role in support of education, albeit with few details as to how he'd go about it. Mayors in Chicago, New York and Boston actually run the school districts - some in cities like Los Angeles and Seattle would like to - but not so in Texas where the legal line's clear about who does run the public schools. In Dallas, that is Superintendent Michael Hinojosa. And I asked Dr. Hinojosa if he was concerned at all about the mayor taking a more active role regarding education.
