The Glenn Mitchel Show, 7/25/05, Hour 1: Treating Terrorists like Pirates & The Trial of Saddam Hussein

Dallas, TX –

KERA 90.1's Glenn Mitchell Show

July 25, 2005, Hour One

Topic: Treating Terrorists like Pirates & The Trial of Saddam Hussein

Guests: Douglas Burgess & M. Cherif Bassiouni

Description: In "The Dread Pirate Bin Laden," the cover story in the current issue of Legal Affairs Magazine, Douglas Burgess, Jr. makes an innovative proposal for fighting terrorists. He argues that recognizing the legal connection between pirates and the modern-day followers of Osama Bin Laden could be one of the most important steps the international community takes to win the global war on terror. Burgess will join us for the first half of the hour. We'll spend the rest of the hour with M. Cherif Bassiouni, distinguished research professor of law and president of the International Human Rights Law Institute at DePaul University College of Law. Bassiouni has just published an open memo to the Prime Minister of Iraq as a web exclusive for Foreign Policy Magazine. He gives several suggestions for the successful handling of what will likely be the most important Iraqi legal case in history in his article "Prosecuting Saddam Hussein."
