Madla Elected President Pro Tempore of Texas Senate

By J. Lyn Carl, GalleryWatch.com

Austin, TX –

Sen. Frank Madla (D-San Antonio) today was elected President Pro Tempore of the Texas Senate for the interim of the 79th Legislature. After a unanimous vote by his fellow senators, Madla was accompanied to the podium in the Senate by his wife Helen, and was sworn in by Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst.

"It's really a privilege to serve with you and I really appreciate the kind words you said, especially since my mother is here," said Madla in accepting the nomination. Madla cited friends who encouraged him to seek office and taught him that it didn't matter what party you were associated with, but "that we were Texans."

Madla praised his staff for his more than 30 years of success in the Legislature, noting they collectively have more than 100 years of service to the state. "My staff has taken care of me in their dealings on a day-in, day-out basis" by dealing with constituents, he said.

Madla's nomination was offered by Sen. Eddie Lucio (D-Brownsville), who noted Madla has served "his constituency and all of Texas" for 31 years in the Texas Legislature, including the last 11 in the Texas Senate.

Lucio said Madla conducts his private and Senate business with the "highest integrity and sensitivity," saying Madla truly cares about his senatorial district and citing his dedication to educating the children of Texas.

Sen. Chris Harris (R-Arlington) seconded the nomination and called Madla a "friend and trusted colleague." Harris called Madla a teacher and a statesman, and a "good man...someone who cares.

"Frank loves this great land called Texas, particularly the culture and the people in his Senate district." Harris said Madla approaches his legislative agenda with "calm reflection, swift action and plain ole Texas-style hard-headedness." He said Madla is known for his "integrity, persistence and generosity."

Another seconding speech was offered by Sen. Jeff Wentworth (R-San Antonio), who said Madla's constituents keep re-electing Madla because he listens, and because he treats people with "respect and unfailing courtesy." He called Madla the "most honest and unassuming" member of the Senate and described Madla as "tenacious, tough, committed and persistent."

Madla was called a "gentleman," a "man of faith," and someone who is committed both to community and family.

Sen. Robert Duncan (R-Lubbock) said he admires Madla's "strength and courage" on many votes, as he has the "courage to do what's right" and is always a "calming voice" in the Senate.

Madla was then unanimously elected President Pro Tempore.
