TX Lt. Gov. Dewhurst Outlines Legislative Proposals to Eliminate Robin Hood, Fund Schools

Dallas, TX –

Texas House Speaker Tom Craddick surprised some last week with a comment about school finance reform. Craddick told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram he did not think Texas could replace all the money property-rich school districts share with poorer ones and end the Robin Hood system. Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst does not agree. He said all 31 senators last month stood behind a plan they believe can put more than $3 billion in new money into education, raise standards, maintain local control, and truly reform school finance. Dewhurst said he believes the Senate plan will satisfy a court order to end Robin Hood. The final school reform bill depends on what the House passes, and Dewhurst said Craddick expects to have a bill by mid-March.
