Unemployment remained low in December -- four percent. But the Labor Department's monthly report did provide additional evidence of the slowdown in the U.S. economy. Hiring inched ahead at a tepid pace, with private firms adding the fewest number of new jobs since last August. And the average number of hours worked per week fell to its lowest level in five years.
