Top Stories: Federal Judge Throws Out Texas Voter ID Law; Transforming An Old Pasta Factory

GUS CONTRERAS / KERA NEWS

The top local stories this evening from KERA News:

A federal judge has once again thrown out Texas' voter ID law. U.S. District Judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos today rejected a weakened version of the law signed by Governor Greg Abbott earlier this year. Texas had made the changes after the same judge compared the original version to a "poll tax" on minorities.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton called the ruling outrageous and says he will appeal it.

Greg Abbott has declared a pre-emptive state of disaster for 30 counties, including Harris County. He's requested extra emergency preparation and has ordered the State Operations Center to elevate its readiness level.

  • In India, castes have been used to determine one's profession, education and place in society. And the lowest ranking are the Dalits, formerly known as "untouchables." Sujatha Gilda was born an untouchable. While she managed to rise above her status, she talked with Krys Boyd today on 'Think' about how this system still exists in modern India.
