Top Stories: State Education Board To Vote On Controversial Textbook This Week

Momentum Instruction

The top local stories this morning from KERA News:

The state education board today will hold a public hearing on a controversial Mexican-American studies textbook.

When the state first called for new textbooks to teach ethnic studies in public schools, “Mexican American Heritage” was the only one submitted. Historians and activists criticized the book. They said it was filled with factual errors and racist statements. The publisher - Momentum Instruction - has made more than 200 changes since.

Momentum Instruction CEO Cynthia Dunbar is a former member of the state education board. Dunbar said only a few of the changes corrected factual errors. The rest were editorial revisions to address other concerns.

In addition to today’s public hearing, the state education board will have a committee hearing tomorrow – and a final vote on Friday.

Other stories this morning:

  • Texas lawmakers may get to spend fewer state tax dollars on border protection if President-Elect Donald Trump boosts security along the U.S.-Mexico border. Some state lawmakers are banking on getting more federal dollars so they won’t have to budget extra cash for border security in the upcoming legislative session.
  • Though kids are practically experts at technology, teachers are struggling to figure out how to get kids to use these tools effectively in the classroom. Stella Chavez visited an elementary school in the Carrollton-Farmers Branch district to check out one classroom’s approach.
