The billion dollar DFW Connector project is almost finished, nine months ahead of schedule. Officials celebrate this morning with a ceremony in Grapevine.
Tony Hartzel, with the Texas Department of Transportation, says the project will improve travel through the 8-mile merge of Highways 121 and 114 in Grapevine – often called ‘the funnel.’ More than 200,000 cars a day travel that stretch ending at the north end of DFW Airport.
“We are doubling the number of lanes around 114 and Main Street. We are going from 12 lanes to 24 total lanes in that area, which is wider than a football field," Hartzel said. "So, there’s a lot more capacity, both in the general lanes and we are adding two managed lanes in each direction.”
The managed, or toll lanes, won’t be open until next year. And work on some minor spots will continue for the next month or so.
About 20 percent of Tarrant County residents commute into the Dallas area to work each day, according to the US Census. Hartzel says those who live in Grapevine, Southlake or other nearby communities should find a quicker commute now.
