Texas Gov. Rick Perry
Texas Gov. Rick Perry

By Shelley Kofler, KERA News

Dallas, TX – State republican leaders today dismissed what they called predictions of "economic armageddon" in Texas. Despite claims that a massive state budget shortfall could gut education and health services Lieutenant Governor and House Speaker joined Governor Perry in repeating the legislature won't raise taxes.

Perry: We start from the shared embrace of three guiding principles: don't raise taxes; work with the available revenue; evaluate all programs and agencies as we scrub the budget.

Some lawmakers are asking why Governor Perry has called made the elimination of sanctuary cities instead of the budget an emergency item. Emergency items are fast tracked and can be acted upon without following normal procedures.
