Dallas, Texas – Dallas County Commissioners warn the jail is nearing capacity and they will call an emergency meeting within the week to tackle the problem.
Commissioner John Wiley Price says the inmate population is closing in on 7,000, which means it's also approaching the maximum number the Jail Standards Commission will tolerate.
Commissioner John Wiley Price: The jail commission can come in and basically close us down and make us divert. Harris County, they have 2000 inmates they must divert to Louisiana at a tune of about $20,000,000.
Price says judges may have to consider alternative sentencing to reduce the growing jail population, even if they don't like it.
