Dallas, TX –
A nursing home in Stephenville has been evacuated after straight line winds tore off a section of its roof. Stephenville Police Chief Roy Halsell says no one was injured and the 24 residents were taken to another nursing home in the North Texas town Thursday afternoon.
National Weather Service meteorologist Jennifer Dunn in Fort Worth says winds were estimated between 60 and 70 miles per hour.
The fast-moving storm blew off a carport roof, damaged a traffic light and took down some trees and power lines in the North Texas town, located about 90 miles southwest of Dallas.
Stephenville police say there was some flooding on the Tarleton State University campus, and the National Weather Service reports part of the school physical plant's roof was blown off.
Ex-suspects in alleged Texas dragging death file lawsuit
Two white suspects cleared in the death of a black man who was allegedly dragged beneath a truck are suing the Texas officials who had them jailed for months.
The federal lawsuit filed this week seeks at least $4 million for Shannon Finley and Ryan Crostley. They were once the main suspects in the 2008 death of their friend, Brandon McClelland of Paris.
Authorities accused the men of running down McClelland and dragging his body beneath a pickup on the way home from a beer run to Oklahoma. Murder charges were eventually dropped because of a lack of evidence and eyewitnesses.
A gravel truck driver gave a sworn statement acknowledging he might have accidentally run over McClelland.
Lamar County spokesman Allan Hubbard and DPS spokeswoman Tela Mange declined comment.
Stanford's daughter agrees to vacate $1.3M condo
The daughter of jailed Texas businessman R. Allen Stanford has dropped her fight to stay in her $1.3 million Houston condominium.
An attorney working for court-appointed receiver Ralph Janvey said Thursday that Randi Stanford has agreed to move out of the 2,800-square-foot condo by March 31.
Stanford was to appear at a hearing Thursday in federal court in Dallas to show why she should not be held in contempt for refusing to cooperate with government efforts to sell the condo. The condo was a gift from her father, who is accused of leading a $7 billion Ponzi scheme.
Janvey plans to sell the condo and direct the proceeds to allegedly defrauded investors.
