Dallas, TX –

The Dallas Independent School District is holding a pair of trustee runoff elections today. Voters say they're most concerned about last year's budget deficit, and today's results could shift the board's focus. KERA's Bill Zeeble reports.

District 3 incumbent Leigh Ann Ellis faces challenger Bruce Parrott, who says the board has not held Superintendent Hinojosa accountable for last year's 84 million dollar budget deficit. Ellis reminds voters not to miss the academic successes that have been led by the Superintendent. She too says she'll more closely watch Hinojosa and his budget.

In District 9, Bernadette Nutall, a Black candidate, faces Sally Cain, who's white. Both say race is not an issue, have been involved in education for years, and each says she's the better candidate. Nutall says she'll scrutinize the budget line by line. Cain says it's time for more early-childhood education programs. The seat has long-held by an African American. Polls close at 7 tonight.
