White Expected To Announce Today

By Bill Zeeble, KERA News

Dallas, TX –

Houston Mayor Bill White is expected to file as a Democratic candidate for Texas governor today, and then officially announce his candidacy.

Tom Schieffer had been the highest profile Democrat seeking the office, but withdrew last week. The Bush administration appointee said it was tough finding enough support to ignite his campaign.

Southern Methodist University's Political Science Professor, Cal Jillson, predicts White stands a better chance at victory - though an uphill one - if he faces Governor Perry rather than the more moderate Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison.

Jillson: Which gives White an opportunity to move over to the middle and capture some independent votes and make a real race of it. So I think Bill White is in the race at least partially because he thinks that Rick Perry may be his opponent

White is expected to withdraw from the U.S. Senate race, now that Senator Hutchison says she'll retain her office while running to defeat Governor Perry in the Republican primary.

KERA will carry a Republican gubernatorial primary debate January 14th and will also invite Democrats to a debate.
