Dallas, TX – As Dallas rolls out a three-year study to bring the Trinity River levees up to stricter, post-Katrina standards, Mayor Tom Leppert is advising property owners along the levees to buy flood insurance NOW. He says that would lock-in the rates charged BEFORE the levees failed inspection.

Leppert: The FEMA de-accreditation process began in April 2009, and FEMA estimates that the time required to revise the levee floodplain map is somewhere between 18 and 24 months.

The city HOPES to get an early assessment of levee weaknesses, and have corrections underway before January 2011. That "could" beat the deadline for a revised floodplain map and higher insurance rates.
