Time's Running On Texas Tuition Plan
By Bill Zeeble, KERA News
Dallas, TX – The deadline is approaching for parents to enroll their children in the Texas prepaid college fund. KERA's Bill Zeeble has more.
Saturday, February 28th marks the last day to join this year's Texas Tuition "Promise Fund." It's the state's new, prepaid college tuition program. Enrollment - which opened in September and closes at month's end - locks in current tuition and fees for Texas public colleges. Low monthly payments, spread over many years, help make college affordable before youngsters grow old enough to attend. RJ De Silva is with the state comptroller's office.
RJ De Silva: Families can cover themselves against future tuition inflation by prepaying at today's prices, that's key specially after tuition increases, from the families perspective.
The legislature de-regulated state college and university tuitions in 2003. Fees then rose at least 58 percent. The so-called Promise fund replaces the old Texas Tomorrow fund, which closed down 6 years agon.
