Judge Dismisses Lawsuit Against Farmers Branch

By BJ Austin, KERA Reporter

Dallas, TX –

A federal judge has thrown out a voting rights lawsuit challenging the at-large election of Farmers Branch City Council members. The plaintiffs argued that the at-large system dilutes Hispanic voting strength. Attorney Domingo Garcia says they have not decided whether to appeal.

Garcia: "We're looking at both options, but definitely the ballot box. They're going to realize that diversity is a strength, not a weakness. And it's better to bring people together than divide them."

The Judge dismissed the case "with prejudice," meaning the suit cannot be brought again by the same plaintiffs. Another federal judge has barred the city from enforcing its latest ordinance barring apartment rentals to illegal immigrants.
