Dallas Teachers Await Fates

By Bill Zeeble, KERA Reporter

Dallas, TX – More than 1,000 Dallas school employees await word on their job futures this week. Five percent of the district workers are slated for pink slips to help fix a huge budget deficit. KERA's Bill Zeeble reports.

Of the 1,100 or so employees who will be laid off, half will be teachers, according to the superintendent. The move is designed to scale back a work force that is too big for the budget. The district said it unknowingly hired too many people and could go $84 million in the red this year without cuts. Teachers will initially find out if they are layoff targets beginning this Friday.

The process of naming teachers could stretch a week. They could either accept the buyout plan and get two months pay, or challenge their reduction in force, sending the layoff into further negotiations.
