It would go in the floodplain between the Margaret McDermott and Ron Kirk bridges near downtown. The $150 million park is designed to survive — and thrive — even when the river floods.

The Texas Department of Transportation could soon answer some of the biggest questions looming over a controversial Dallas plan to build a toll road alongside a massive urban park inside a flood plain.


For more than a decade, Dallas residents have been waiting for a park along the Trinity River. The nonprofit Trinity Trust is doling $1 million of private money to plan it. But not everybody’s happy about that.

And they also got into a lesser-talked about element of the project – how it would affect the city’s levee system.

Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings is set to unveil new recommendations for the controversial Trinity Toll Road today. And the Dallas City Council will discuss the suggestions in a special meeting Thursday afternoon. The divisive project is having an impact on the May City Council elections.

The debate was civil Thursday night in one of Dallas’ hottest  city council races, between incumbents Delia Jasso and Scott Griggs. There are big differences between the two, where re-drawn council districts covering North Oak Cliff forced the face-off.

The North Texas Tollway Authority and TxDOT heard from the public Tuesday on the proposed Trinity Parkway. A majority of citizen speakers questioned the wisdom of building a toll road in the flood plain and through a planned park.
